After some heated public discussion, the Rappahannock County Planning Commission recommended that the Board of Supervisors approve Faith Mountain Corporation’s application for rezoning for expansion.
The Board of Supervisors will consider the application at their next meeting this Monday. If the Board approves, the corporation plans to build a catalog mail-order facility on the site. The existing building will become a retail store and office space.
The property is adjacent to the corporation’s present facilities on U.S. 211/522 opposite the intersection with Route 622 between Sperry ville and Washington. The land is presently part of a 45-acre plot north of the highway zoned A-l (Agriculture) that belongs to Mr. and Mrs. Wilbur Wright. The application asks that the ten acres closest to the highway be rezoned G-C (General Commercial).
The hearing in the County Courthouse, under chairman Allen Stokes, was attended by about 40 people. In his presentation before the commission attorney Douglas Baumgardner stressed that the request was for “specific use rezoning,” and that it will encompass site-plan approval by the Planning Commission, including primary improvement, landscaping, screening and lighting.
Using drawings and charts, he pointed out that the new facility will be built at the eastern edge of the 10-acre property. This borders an existing right-of-way and abuts property to the east that is already planned for commercial zoning. Screening to the west
