serve their full terms. This costs us $20,000 a year per criminal and anyone who knows anything about prisons knows that the hope of getting out early is all the keeps prisoners from killing each other or the guards. Allen is against welfare as a way of life, but doesn’t say what he’d do about it. He is for taxpayers getting their money’s worth out of government. Who isn’t? He is against special interests, except his own special interests: the National Rifle Association, the anti-abortion movement and Pat Robertson’s “Christian” Coalition.

Allen’s TV commercial tells us about his own integrity and honesty. There is lan old American proverb: When a man brags that he’s honest, grab your wallet.

A Crisis Of Values

To the Editor:

I want to call your attention to an important publication recently released by The Heritage Foundation, the Index of Leading Cultural Indicators. Written by William Bennett, the Index is a comprehensive statistical portrait of behavioral trends over the last 30 years.

It shows, for example, that while population has increased 41 percent since 1960, violent crime has increased 560 percent; illegitimate births have incrased more than 400 percent; divorce rates have quadrupled; the percentage of children living in single-parent homes has tripled, and the teenage suicide rate has increased more than 200 percent.

As a member of The Heritage Foundation, I am eager to see the facts in this document given wide publicity. Only if we admit we are in a crisis of values can we begin to reverse our cultural decline.

To obtain a copy of the Index, call The Heritage Foundation’s Publications Office at (202) 546-4400.
