Certainly there are legitimate issues of equal treatment for high school athletes in current high school schedules. Because football has such a hold on sports fans during the fall, the girls basketball games are not usually scheduled for Friday nights when football games take place.
Then in the winter when boys play basketball and girls play volleyball the basketball teams generally play on Tuesday and Friday nights while volleyball games are generally on Monday or Thursday nights.
The larger AAA schools, such as Fauquier High, play girls’ basketball in the winter along with boys’ basketball. Even so they run into issues of sexual discrimination. The games have traditionally been played with both girls’ and boys’ varsity teams playing at the same school. Then the issue becomes which team plays first. It has traditionally been the girls. The second game generally draws the larger crowd, and the girls arid their fans have asked to have the girls’ game scheduled second for half the games.
It would not be possible to schedule both boys and girls games for the same night at the same school in the Bull Run District because none of the schools in the district has four locker rooms.
It would be possible to have boys’ varsity and junior varsity playing at one school while the other school hosts the two girls’ games, but this would divide the crowd that likes to follow both boys’ and girls’ teams and would probably cut down on ticket receipts. Playing boys and girls games on different nights would often mean four evenings a week with games scheduled, but this is already the case with boys’ basketball and girls’ volleyball.
School Superintendent David Gangel advised the board not to respond to the survey. “If it is really a legal issue, the state should have its lawyers resolve it,” he said. If it is not a legal issue, he added that the VHSL could resolve the issue in the same way season schedules have been set in the past. He said a survey is not the way to handle the issue, and the School Board agreed.
In either case, it won’t matter much what seasons the Rappahannock school system favoss.
