The problem here for our times is not Disney’s 3,000 acres, it is what Joel Garreau so well has termed this next Edge City, swallowing hundreds of thousands of acres in this Haymarket corridor. If Disney is driven away, we will still inescapably have to answer to what comes next in western Prince William County.
The Disney proposal has now fired the Edge City boiler. If our local representatives in fact represent our best interests here and in Prince William County, they have now got to put the hard teeth of law in our comprehensive plans and zoning to permanently block permits for the hucksters and strip developers to come. The Disney Company itself has urged such laws here.
If this test ends with our time and energy burned out bashing the lead player, Disney, and without laws blocking that future agony, we will have missed the real target — urban sprawl licensed by our own state and local governments. We will have shot ourselves not in the foot, but in the heart, and destroyed this great beautiful countryside forever.
