“It was the strangest game I have ever coached, and I have been coaching soccer for 17 years,” said Coach Uli Maeyer of the game played last week between RCHS and Clarke County.
In the first half, Clarke scored three times out of the five times they were in front of the goal.
During halftime, Coach Maeyer had a pep talk with his players and told them that they could pull it out. jr' Back on the field, Jonathan Maeyer scored first. TTien Carlos Avelar, RCHS’s exchange student from Brazil, scored an incredible five goals within 17 minutes. “I have never seen anything like it. Each goal was different,” said Coach Maeyer. i
He added, “Carlos is an absolutely unique player. I think he is a talent that I have not coached before. He is a striker and is still a team player, not at all arrogant. He is a great contribution to the team.”
Coach Maeyer said that his team has character and self-confidence. ’’They were scheduled to play at Central Tuesday and at Brentsville Thursday. Both games are set for 7 p.m. The next home game will be against Quantico on Monday at 5 p.m.
The RCHS baseball team lost to Manassas Park, 14-4, on Monday.
