I don’t know of anything we can do but look at our ordinances,. and we ask the Planning Commission to do that.” r
Stonewall-Hawthom District representative Robert Anderson noted that Culpeper County is doing many things to attract business^ “There are some factions that wish' we’d closed the gate on (U.S.) 211 when they moved out here. I’d hate to see us advertise,” he said.
“I don’t mean advertise to live here,” Col. Bingham said. “There are only 2,700 homes paying the freight for the county...We’ve got to come up with some way to bring money in and take the pressure off the real estate tax.”
He suggested the county explore the possibility of passing a “meals and lodgings” tax. County Administrator John McCarthy said that for a county to pass such a tax, it must be approved by the voters in a referrendum. *
With little discussion the supervisors approved an update to the emergency operations plan and adopted the six-year secondary road plan.
VDOT resident engineer Robert Moore said improvements to a> bridge on Route 637 had been taken', out of the six-year road plan would be handled with the mainte-; nance budget. He said the state was estimating more money would bi»available for road projects. He alsd said he expected most of the work OH. the four-lane project on U.S. 522-211' would be completed by the end <rf April and eastbound traffic would beT separated from westbound traffic, . Z
The board asked Mr. McCarthy to write to people at Virginia Teclr responsible for the Extension Service budget urging them to continue to fund an agriculture agent for Rappahannock County.
They postponed until the May meeting appointing a replacement for Allen Stokes as a member of the Planning Commission from Piedmont District. Mr. Stokes, who served as chairman for many years, has asked not to be reappointed. The board signed a resolution thanking him for his service.
