The ladies’ timber contest featured a trio of points-seekers mounted on three evenly matched jumpers — an exact recipe for exciting racing action. Michele Rouse’s sanctioned winner Political Angel took the early lead, shadowed closely by ’93 series champ Tom’s War, Ready Snodgrass up, and Duke Kahana Moku, Beth Newman.
“I was a little worried about Duke in the early running,” Ms. Newman, the winner, said later. “He didn’t take a big hold like he normally does. He warmed up alright, but he was kind to rate . . , unusual for him. When we raced down the [very steep, final] hill, though, he picked it right up.”
