BZA Grants
Variance

Last week, the Board of Zoning Appeals approved a variance for a setback of 16 to 18 feet for a house to be built by Mike Fewell of Huntly.
Mr. Fewell plans to build a 26 by 40 foot house for his family, on a lot which fronts on a private road. According to the zoning ordinance, the front setback should be 100 feet, but Mr. Fewell said that without a variance to that requirement, the house he wants to build would be too small for him, his wife and two children.
Instead of being 100 feet from the road, the variance for a setback of 82.5 feet was granted.
A previous owner of the property had applied for a variance, which was denied. When this was brought up at the meeting, BZA member Jennifer Matthews noted that that was for a "dream house”, which would have been much larger than the proposed Fewell house.
Two neighbors, the Corbins, were present at the meeting and stated that they had no objection to the variance being granted the Fewells. Another neighbor, Patricia Noll, also showed up at the meeting to inquire as to how far the house would be from her house. She was told by John McCarthy that her house was across the street from the Fewell’s land, not adjoining their property as she had believed.
