11th graders and dropped slightly from 32 to 31 percent for 8th graders.
As measures of how well the schools are doing in increasing the graduation rate the state uses composite scores above the bottom 25 percent. For 4th and 8th graders last year those scores were essentially unchanged at 89 percent in 1993 compared to 90 percent in 1992 for 4th graders and continuing at 89 percent for 8th graders. Statewide results dropped from 86 to 85 percent for 4th graders and remained at 82 percent for 8th graders.
One measure the state uses to determine how well schools are doing at educating elementary school students is the percentage of 4th graders in the top half of composite scores. For the local elementary school last year that dropped to 54 percent from 74 percent in 1992, while the state percentage remained at 63.
As a measure of how well schools are educating middle school students (those in 6th, 7th and 8th grades) the state uses the percentage with composite scores in the top 50 percent. For Rappahannock last year that dropped from 65 percent in 1992 to 56 percent, while the state percentage dropped from 59 to 58 percent.
