Last week, a jury of eight women and four men found Jake Thomas ‘Tommy” Taylor, 35, of Castleton, guilty of attempted rape, attempted sodomy, sexual battery and breaking and entering, and recommended a sentence totalling nine and one-half years in the state penitentiary.

The offenses took place on Oct. 19, 1993. The victim is 20 years old. She and her boyfriend had been friends with the defendant for more than a year when the incidents occurred.

According to the victim’s testimony, she was at home alone, in the trailer she shared with her boyfriend, having gone back to bed after he left for work. At about 8:55 a.m., she heard something at the door, sat up in bed, and saw that someone was inside the door. She described the intruder as a man dressed in camouflage clothing and brown gloves. His head was covered with a T-shirt, worn as a mask, so that only his eyes showed, though he was wearing sunglasses. He walked quickly down the haDway to the bedroom, and pushed the victim, who was dressed in underclothes, down on the bed.

At this point, the victim testified, she already knew that it was Tommy Taylor, the defendant. She said, “He put tape on my mouth and put plastic ties on my hands. He cut the tape with his knife. The hands were bound behind my back. He did not say anything.”

The victim further testified that he had removed his gloves when he entered the bedroom, and then he fondled her, and she resisted and kicked him. This went on for a few minutes, and then he
