Judge Snead said one of the most difficult parts was writing about his aunts and uncles. “I had to be careful,” he said. “I didn’t want to paint them as paragons of virtue, but I didn’t want to say anything toajaad either. I also didn’t want to make it a lot of heavy reading because then not even the children would read it.”
He received help from his sisterin-law Mary Quaintance Snead in doing the research to write the prologue on Gideon Brown for whom Gid Brown Hollow is named. Mrs. Snead is a great great niece of Gideon Brown. Learning about Brown was one of the most interesting parts of the writing project, Judge Snead said.
There were only 600 copies of this book printed, and they are likely to be gone soon. The book is crammed with tales of the sort of Rappahannock characters who are fast disappearing. 11
There are chapters on education, hunting, the many jobs to be done on a farm and his first experience with a4-H8teer.
This account of the first 18 years of Judge Snead’s life ends with hjs freshmen year at the University of Virginia and the beginning of the realization that as hard as life could be on a farm in the far reaches of Gid Brown Hollow, it was perhaps the best possible preparation for the rest of a life that has contributed so much to the county of his birth.
