to buy fresh produce. He said it was better quality and was cheaper. Years ago he would take in chickens, turkeys, eggs and other items from his customers to trade for produce. “After everyone started shooting down there I stopped going,” he said.
Now instead of taking care of the store all the time, he takes care of his cows and pigs, and enjoys spending time with his grandson Joshua, who is in kindergarten at RCES.
Back in the 60’s, said Mrs. Makela, she remembers signs in the front window of Hackley’s advertising groups that were playing at Morgan’s, a segregated nightclub east of Hackley’s on U.S. 211: the Supremes, Temptations and B.B. King.
Upon graduation from high school, Mrs. Makela left Rappahannock and moved to Virginia Beach. She met her husband Ron there, and they moved back to Amissville four years ago to take over the store. She said that when she left Rappahannock, there was no arts community, no restaurants, tourism, or four lane highway through Amissville.
It is more than full time for both of them, and they have help from several peoplo, including some high school students. Some of the students attend Culpeper High School, but one, Daniel Hitt, attends RCHS.
