front porch are two large receptacles for recycling bottles and cans. They sell several recycled products, including re-refined automotive oil. Sierra coolant, a safe antifreeze which will not kill dogs, is also on the shelves. They use 100% recycled paper for the copy machine. As far as they know, they are the only country store in the county to sell organic gardening products. Mr. Makela said he doesn’t see the sense in recycling things if you don’t also purchase items made from recycled goods.
Mr. Makela plays selections from his 300-CD collection during the day, such as old jazz, old blues and big band. “It is an old store; we play old music,” he explained.
The hardware department, located toward the back of the store, is probably larger than any in the county except for the Co-op. It includes all sizes of nuts and bolts, painting supplies, sandpaper, chain, tools, tool belts, chain saw oil, and even hog scrapers.
The clothing department is also well stocked, with mens’ work pants, denim jackets, boots, shoes, socks and even underwear. It also has Rappahannock and Hackley’s Tshirts, sweatshirts, suspenders, and denim jumpers. They have a full line of animal feed (the sign hangs from the ceiling behind the checkout counters). Plenty of birdseed is available too. They have thistle seed (especially good for attracting goldfinches) for $1.12 per pound; cracked com for 25 cents a pound; and sunflower seed ranging from 40 to 49 cents a pound.
The toiletries section carries Equine shampoo, which Mrs. Makela says is outstanding. It was developed
