Mr. Anderson noted that Rappahannock County is not far behind Fairfax, in per pupil spending for education, and ahead of Loudoun, Prince William and Fauquier counties.

Having saved about two cents on the potential tax rate, the supervisors next considered a request by the Fire and Rescue Association for $275,587 in funding to cover operating costs for the fire and rescue squads.

Frank Huff said this could be supported by a “fire tax” on real estate. Unlike the regular real estate tax, land use is not considered in the fire tax. County Administrator John McCarthy said. As a result one penny raises about $75,000, and a four-cent tax could cover the request.

The supervisors agreed to advertise a public hearing for next year’s budget that would include a rate of 71 cents on real-estate and a 4-cent fire tax for their June meeting.
