The supervisors heard a long presentation by Dennis Purschwitz on installing an artificial wetland to treat leachate at the landfill. Mr. Purschwitz of Post, Buckley, Schuh and Jernigal said that most existing artificial wetlands are being used for sewage treatment, but they could treat leachate.
The county is currently paying between $38,000 and $40,000 to haul leachate and storm water run-off to the Warrenton Sewage Treatment Plant for treatment and disposal. Mr. Purschwitz estimated the cost of installing an artificial wetland at, $45,000. He said it would be “low tech and easy maintenance.”
The supervisors agreed that Mr. McCarthy and Mr. Purschwitz should explore this option with the state Department of Environmental Quality.
Following an executive session the supervisors appointed James Preston Leake as the new animal warden.
