To the Editor:
Anyone who lives in Rappahannock County knows that the proposed Kellerco road widening plan benefits only the truckers who are either, one, avoiding weighing stations, thus tolls on Interstates 66 or 81 or, two, using Rappahannock County as a shortcut to Charlottesville via Route 231, a designated scenic highway.
I suggest that rather than widening our roads, thus accommodating and encouraging further truck congestion, noise and pollution, that the following sign be posted at both ends of U.S. 522 and Route 231. THIS ROAD IS CLOSED TO ALL THRU TRUCK TRAFFIC; VIOLATORS WILL BE FINED $1,000; RESIDENTS WILL REPORT VIOLATORS. I further suggest that a petition stating this proposal be circulated immediately and sent to all pertinent parties at the local, state and federal levels of government.
Widening U.S. 211 is also ridiculous as it dead ends into a National Park road that can’t handle the traffic generated by the existing four lane highway and which, by its nature, should not be changed to accommodate more. This may be food for a separate petition.
I’m pretty sure that the feeling is widespread that we don’t want Rappahannock County to become just an alternative truck route. If it did, it would lose that charm which attracts the tourist dollar. This charm is far more important to the local economy than the passing trucks, which leave only fumes.
