Last year when we were at Dolly wood in Pigeon Forge, Tenn., we met an elderly couple who proudly told us they had grandchildren in the live play “Christy,” playing nearby which used locals for the play.
“Christy” is based on one of America’s best-loved literary classics by Catherine Marshall. “Christy” stars Kellie Martin (“Life Goes ON”) in the title role; four-time Emmy Award winner Tyne Daly (“Cagney & Lacey”) plays Miss Alice, her mentor, who in 1912, encourages young Christy to forsake city life and move to a poor community in Appalachia. Her mission was to teach school, making a difference in the lives of the poverty-stricken children living in the mountains.
“Christy” also stars Randall Batinkoff (“School ties”) as a young minister who becomes Christy’s soulmate, and Steward Finlay-McLennan (“The Road Warrior”) as the community’s doctor. Tess Harper (“Crimes of the Heart,” “Tender Mercies”) plays Fairlight Spencer, a local woman who helps Christy understand the customs and superstitions of the mountain people.
Although designated a novel, “Christy” is, in fact, a thinly veiled biography of Catherine Marshall’s mother, Leonora Wood, who volunteered to teach in a mission school in Del Rio, Tenn. and was forever changed by the experience. (In the show, Del Rio becomes “Cutter Gap”)
The novel, first published in 1967, is now in its 84th printing. It is estimated 30 million Americans have read the book, which the Baltimore Sun said “overflows with real-life happenings and the spirit of a frontier community where a young woman first encounters life’s real meaning and challenges.”
