Ellen Manson will be running for the Wakefield District seat on the School Board this fall.
She will be up against Paul Nichols who has been on the school board for 32 years. Mr. Nichols had earlier decided not to run, but when contacted on Monday, he said he will be running.
Mrs. Manson has three children (including two'step-children) who •^attend the public high school, and lives in Flint Hill with them and her . husband Wayne Wilson.
Though she has not been a member of a school board before, she feels well qualified to do so. She said, “I think it is a good school system. I believe in community service and I believe we should participate.”
Two of the concerns she would like to see addressed are to build on the current strengths of the programs and to have open communication in the school system. She said, “1 would like to see more of everybody being able to have some input into the schools and being able to ask questions without fear of being given a hard time.”
She said she is really concerned about safety and health issues in the schools, including how safe the buildings are. Also, she believes the students should receive as much health education as possible, especially with AIDS and drug problems being so prominent nowadays. “It would be good to have someone in the school be able to handle emergencies,” she said.
Mrs. Manson said that she fikes being direct, open and honest and feels that people should talk about their problems. She has heard that ' there have been some sexual issues on some of the school buses. “We can’t let things get out of control,” she said.
