This year’s running marks a new third dimension in steeplechase racing with inauguration of the NationsBank Cup, a new race sponsored by NationsBank taking horses over a challenging new course of natural obstacles including Irish Banks, ditches, a stone wall and for the first time in American steeplechasing history, a splashing gallop through open water.
The day’s featured race will be the Virginia Gold Cup, a four mile race for the nation’s timber champions, sponsored by BMW.
