She said she thought uniform street surfaces would look better. “They recommended against it,” she said of VDOT representatives. She said with pebbles in liquid asphalt'“people track in tar on their feet.” Another problem is that snow removal procedures tend to scrape up the pebbles.
Mayor Willis said he had visited Williamsburg recently and found such a surface is only used on pedestrian areas with sand spread to prevent people from picking up ter on their shoes and still “they track into everywhere.”
Charles Eldred, who used to work for VDOT, said, “It’s an absolute mess.” He said regular asphalt looks very black when it is first applied, but as it weathers it takes on the character of the native stone used in it. In this area local blue stone is used and the asphalt weathers to gray. It would be possible to use another color stone in the mix, but that would be very expensive because of transportation costs, he said.
