Beginning in 1975 though, Sally and Daniel Keyser in Old Hollow began sponsoring a brother and sister, Michelle and Michael, who then lived in the Queens borough of New York City. Michelle was five and Michael was six. Before visiting the Keysers, said Mrs. Keyser, they had never walked barefoot or had a picnic.

Michelle now 26, is married and lives in California; Michael lives in Utah.

Michelle visits the Keysers every Thanksgiving and sometimes more often. “She is like a grandchild to us. We hear from her all year long,” said Mrs. Keyser, who was eager to show photographs of both Michelle and Michael, as they look now and as children when they visited as part of the Fresh Air Fund.
