getting nearer with each one, I decided it was time to come to terms with reality and call my dad.

My father, dedicated vacationer that he is, decided that we would still go. Thus that night 1 went to sleep with visions of palm tree$ and crystal clear waters dancing in my head.'

It wasn’t meant to be though. The rnext day on “Today” Bertha was a about half a thumbnail away from the I Bahamas. ‘

A few hours later as I slipped into t the back of my dad’s convertible, I i asked him and his girlfriend if we ’ were still going.

“No, We’ll get down there and the air port will get messed up and we’ll be stuck for weeks!” they saidr

Since when was it a problem to get stuck somewhere like that? I didn’t complain though. Instead I popped Alanis Morrisette in my tape player and began to sing away the time it took us to get to Myrtle Beach.

About halfway through North Carolina I looked at them and jokingly said, “Wouldn’t it be funny if we get down there and it hits Myrtle Beach too?”

I plopped my suitcase on the bed and headed towards the drawers to unpack my stuff. Dad had already turned oh the Weather Channel and we all heard the awful news at once. Bertha was on the Bahamas; however^ she was expected to hit us after she left there.

I’d had enough for one day and went to bed.

The next day we went to breakfast and saw on television that the hurricane was coming nearer and nearer to us. My dad’s girlfriend and I headed for the beach and stayed there for a while. Then we went from hotel to hotel pretending we were guests so we could try out their pools.

That night the three of us went to a show and returned home to once again watch the Weather Channel and see that Bertha was not far from hitting us.

I woke up early and walked out on the balcony to see that almost all the cars were gone and the ones that were there were being packed to leave.

“Evacuation,” my dad frowned.

That was my vacation. We’re supposed to try again August 13-15. By then though hurrican Charles may be heading for the islands.
