Citizens are paying more now than ever before in state and federal taxes. If the county can not meet their financial goals with the money it has already squeezed out of citizens, then cut the budget! Citizens who feel that their interests are not being funded sufficiently, including schools, should make up shortfalls through voluntary contributions. It should not be put on the backs of overburdened citizens through mandatory taxation.
As for unfunded mandates, we must support conservative politicians who resist state and federal mandates and respect local control. Otherwise, if unfunded mandates are pushed upon localities, then fine, do not follow that particular mandate period.
On July 3, this paper claims that it recognizes and supports ongoing volunteerism and will remain “politically independent.”
If volunteerism is the hallmark of this community, why have my local taxes almost doubled in eight years? What a strange type of volunteerism! Volunteer your pay, or lose your home.
Also, as stated in both editorials, this paper believes that our local officials should remain non partisan and that this paper is politically independent. With the large local tax increases advocated by most county officials and this newspaper, both agree that county citizens need to pay more taxes, and that we need to “redistribute wealth with our village.” This philosophy is espoused by the Democratic party; therefore, please don’t claim non partiality when it obviously does not exist! Claiming it does not make it so. It only shows the dishonesty of this newspaper.
