Phyllis Magrab’s exhibition of 14 acrylic on paper paintings, the July show at the Middle Street Gallery, features large minimalist abstractions of many colors.
The success of this show can be measured by the fact that after the opening on Sunday, July 7, 10 of the pictures have been sold.
Each picture for the most part features one color, like the blue one entitled “Arctic Air” where a misty atmosphere is suggested. How the colors “behave” is much influenced by the way light strikes the surfaces to a greater extent than one usually notices.
Unfortunately, the protecting glass can make seeing the paintings difficult. I’m wondering if the medium affects the way light reflects from the glass? All the surface of the picture plane is covered and because of the way the paint is applied, there are virtually no edges or negative spaces.
