There will be a free water monitoring workshop with Jay Gilliam of the Virginia Chapter of the Izaak Walton League of America from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 7.
The workshop is open to anyone interested in establishing a water monitoring station on a stream or river in the county and will include a hands-on demonstration on the Thornton River at Oldway Art Village as well as a slide show and open discussion about the basic essentials of why and how to establish such a program.
Jay Gilliam is vice president of the Virginia Chapter of the Izaak Walton League, and as such is in charge of establishing a water monitoring network across the state. His highly regarded programs on the Maury River near Staunton and Lexington have become a model for citizen volunteer monitoring. He and his wife Anita helped co-ordinate the recent Citizens for Water Quality Summit in Charlottesville where several Rappahannock area artists displayed water-inspired art.
The workshop will begin at 10 a.m. at the Rappahannock Extension office on Gay Street across from Ki, Theatre. After a round-table discussion there, participants will proceed to Mountainside Market in Sperryville for lunch. Participants may purchase
