In fact, when she teaches new steps or reviews old ones, Ms. Duvall segregates students just like those old cotillion classes, teaching the men their part first and then the women.
The similarity between 12-yearold cotillion parties and these classes ends there. Cotillion wasn’t nearly this much fun.
Ms. Duvall has been teaching in this area for several years and has been teaching ballroom dance for 20 years. Although there are people in the class who have never danced a day in their lives, Ms. Duvall’s habit of reviewing basic steps every week, combined with her sense of humor, helps people get over their nervousness and encourages them to learn at their own pace.
She starts off this class with a review of the fox trot. With the men lined up behind her, she walks through the basic box step. She puts up , her arms as if holding a partner and takes two slow steps forward, then two quick steps to the side, two slow steps back, then two quick to the side. The line of men obediently follows along behind.
After a little practice, she shows them a new step to work on, answering questions as she goes. She then turns around and repeats the process with the women behind her. Then it’s time to dance.
As she puts on more music — maybe Ella Fitzgerald this time — people choose partners and begin to practice the steps they just reviewed. Ms. Duvall wanders among the dancers, trying to avoid the inevitable collisions, giving one-onone instruction where she can.
As the music ends she again tells people to switch partners and keep dancing. Usually before class is over, each person has had a chance to dance with almost every possible partner in the room. Couples who come together often only dance together once or twice until the class is over.
Before class ends, Ms. Duvall teaches or reviews two or three different dances. This class will include instruction in the fox trot, the swing and the rumba, and she promises to teach the Argentine Tango soon.
At 9:30 p.m., class officially ends, but Ms. Duvall puts on mixed dance songs and invites people to stay as long as they like. Sometimes
