The Problem
To the Editor:
1 would like to express my concern for our local school system and how it is being managed.
Year after year local taxes have steadily increased to fund this school system, while breaking the backs of its hard working citizens.
What do we have to show for this investment? Most county residents, if they had the choice (vouchers), would send their children to private schools or homeschool them. Citizens know that this public school system (and most public schools in general) are failing. It has taken to the present for the Rappahannock school system to finally admit that “whole language” instruction has been failing, while most private schools and some respectable public schools have long been aware of this. Sixth grade percentages for passing all three passport tests have declined from 82.6 percent in 1993 to an embarrassing 47.3 percent in 1996.
