Writing of the lovely and ubiquitous Queen Anne’s Lace in the August . 14 issue of the Rappahannock News, • naturalist John Trott states, “I. do not - know which Queen Anne gave her name to this plant.”
The plant is named, not for a queen of England or France, but for" the apocryphal St. Anne, according to legend the mother of Mary and hence grandmother of Jesus. She was much loved and venerated in the late Middle Ages and was honored as patron by numerous craftsmen (and women), ^ including lacemakers.
The graceful wildflower blooming'. along our roadsides and in our fields 1 might more accurately be called “St. ; Anne’s Lace.”
