“I think we have a lot of talent and a really big team height wise,” Coach Jenkins said. Eight returned from last year’s JV; three have played at other schools but not at RCHS, and four are basically new to the game.
With only four schools in the new Bull Run District, Coach Jenkins expects her team to be in the running throughout the season. She said any of the 12 could become starters and looked forward to the start of competition to get a better idea of how the girls will perform.
“There is a lot of potential. I think they will really play well together,” she added.
Both the varsity and JV struggled Monday in scrimmages with Clarke County, with the JV falling behind and the varsity getting the better of the Eagles.
Varsity Coach Laura Conklin said that last year all her varsity team needed was a point guard. She said that Sonya Wigington filled that position very well at Monday night’s scrimmage. She has no doubt that Sonya, who is just a freshman this year, will be the best player in the district by her senior year. Sonya has only been playing organized ball few one year, she added.
Coach Conklin said her team played great defense on Monday night and she believes her players will complement each other nicely. “Almost everyone stole the ball at least once,” she said.
“I am excited because I see such a tremendous change already from last year,” she added.
