The Virginia Department of ; Agricultural and Consumer Services ■ Regulatory Lab in Warrenton provides * lab services for residents of Rappahannock and surrounding counties.
The animal health lab is one of five in the state, the others being in Harrisonburg, Ivor, Lynchburg and "VVytheville. The lab’s main purpose is - to prevent, control and diagnose livestock and poultry diseases. Testing is offered in bacteriology, serology, virology, parasitology, pathology and field diagnostics.
Sperryville resident Joe Garvin 1 has been the Director and * Diagnostician of the lab for the past * five years. Dr. Garvin and his staff of ‘three microbiologists, a microbiologist supervisor, a lab aide and a necropsy technician, offer support to veterinarians and farmers to test their . afiimals for diseases, and to do necrop‘ sies to determine cause of death. “We * hre here primarily for agricultural and 'horse owners,” said Dr. Garvin. • ' About 50 percent of Dr. Garvin’s lime on the job is performing necropsies (post-mortem examinations) of animals. He performed 179 necropsies ’. dtiring January through June of this ‘ year, the majority on cattle, though he * has also done post-mortems on more unusual animals such as peafowl, a cpckatiel, a red deer and a hamster. The Rappahannock Farmers’ Association will be hosting a Fall - Festival at Windsor Lodge Farm . beginning at 5 p.m. and lasting until ' 11 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 14.
The event will feature a dinner consisting of beef, potato salad, cole slaw, baked beans, rolls, dessert and beverage. Hotdogs and hamburgers • "will also be provided for children. • • The activities tentatively scheduled 1 for the evening will include a raffle of a; steer to be butchered and processed • at the winner’s discretion. There will also be an auction of items including . prints and paintings by local artists, meals for two at various local restau• rants and assorted items for farm use.
