The day after I learned of Roger Tory Peterson’s death, I was again in the Peterson Garden at Airlie. It was filled with color and variety; it was also filled with people who were using A Field Guide to the Butterflies. We were conducting an official count. 1 saw people using A Field Guide to.the Wildflowers to check identification of some of the blooms. I had A Field Guide to the Birds in my back pocket. •When a Carolina Wren erupted into loud, emphatic song from a thick head of rosy-purple Joe Pye Weed, questioning faces turned to me for naming.
How pleased Peterson would have been with this scene; pleased with the garden, its human butterfly counters and — most of all — with the wren’s contribution.
The death of Roger Tory Peterson marked the end of an era for American birds, bird watchers and the whole of American wildlife. Paterson’s passing also signaled the beginning of another era, all set in motion by this greatest of 20th century naturalist-teachers.
