the Moon with some fresh players in the final inning. Ivan “Yogi” Ussach drummed a deep liner, a little left of center. Hunt Harris followed with a powerful smash just inside the baseline. But “Justin Time” Ferrence robbed Jody Carbone of two RBIs and extra bases with a spectacular catch in left field to end the rally. Ferrence seems certain to be a consensus pick for AllNatural League this year, along with Pete DiDomenico, the cagey third baseman with the strong arm, and savvy right fielder Jack Shore.
For the Mountain, Lisa Betz is guaranteed All-Natural, with her sterling play on both offense and defense, as are power hitters Warren Darnell and Dave Gilman.
‘The play’s the thing,” said Mountain catcher Howard Coon, summing up the philosophy of the Natural League. Nonetheless, it must be recorded, it was the Moon over the Mountain. The Moon/Mountain series continues at 6 p.m. (Rappahannock time) Monday, no doubt another great day for softball.
