I I have frequently heard the Black Cherry spoken of as a ‘weed tree.’ The leaves of a Black Cherry can be poisonous to horses and cattle. Other than that, I can think of nothing negative to $ay about this Virginia native.

In bloom, the cherry is a fine sight With its pendulous clusters of white flowers that bees visit in great numbers ibr pollen and nectar. Cherry wood has it fine grain and furniture made from it is very beautiful indeed, t Black Cherry trees of the size to (hake elegant furniture are not frequently seen these days. Massive specimens of this tree must have dominated the eastern woods when the settlers first arrived. Birds like the small, blue-black fruits of this tree and gorge on them when moving north during fall migration. They ‘tank up’ on these cherries before taking off for winter quarters in Central and South America. Birds also Spread the seeds when, after digesting diem, they eject the tiny seeds everywhere.
