Tbwn planning, traffic problems and landscaping plans for U.S. 211 were the topics of discussion at the monthly Sperryville Gateway Committee meeting on June 17. About 50 Piedmont District residents all concerned about the Town of Sperryville attended the meeting.
Speeding truck traffic through Main Street was a concern of a number of speakers. They asked why the committee had not presented the Rappahannock County Board of Supervisors with requests for a 25 mph speed limit and a ban on through-trucks on Main Street.
Bayard Catron, alternate committee board member, referred to motions unanimously passed at a March meeting to request the board of supervisors to take such action.
Tom Junk, committee chairman and Rappahannock Planning Commission member, said that a ban on trucks through Main Street would cause more of a traffic problem while road construction is in progress. “Just like Christmas, you don’t always get everything you want,” he said.
Sheriff Gary Settle attended the meeting and commented later that he grew up in Sperryville and has walked along the roads. He said he shares the same concern as the residents that Main Street is narrow and pedestrians are in danger. He said deputies patrol the area during their shifts, but it would be impossible to provide 24-hour stationary radar patrol.
Virginia Department of Transportation engineer Bob Moore said that he would prefer to not implement restrictions on Main Street until after the turn-lane project was completed. If traffic has another direction to go, it would reduce back-up,
