Gateway Committee moving ahead,
issue of truck traffic a big concern
The Sperryville Gateway Committee has really
taken off. They now have a facilitator, Judy
Cornwell and have devised a list of ideas and objectives they plan to tackle by categories — tourism, economic development and village concept
A big concern is speeding truck traffic through Main Street. The issue has been brought befote the committee and it’s up to them to take it before the board of supervisors. The requests are for a 25 mph speed limit and a ban on through-trucks on Main Street — both good ideas.
Main Street is narrow, has no sidewalks and that clearly presents a danger to pedestrians. In fact, the street’s width presents a problem for cars having to pass large trucks there. A ban on truck traffic should result in increased pedestrian traffic — a plus for shop owners along Main Street.
A right-hand turn on U.S. 211 east will remain and there is no reason that trucks cannot take the extra three, four or five minutes to go that route instead. Hopefully the idea will be sent before the supervisors for consideration.
