role the town has played in regional history; obtaining a reduced speed limit through the town’s main street; a temporary US Postal Station and pictorial cancellation (postmark) for the bicentennial; a comprehensive history parade; and, a mountain top festival featuring live music, regional foods and crafts, historical re-enactments, historic displays, period costumes, public addresses, song, poetry and so on.
Special features and ideas which have been brain stormed to date on the historic activities include: Regional history parade through Cherry Street (now U.S. 522); representative entries from each significant historic event by phases:
Phase I, “Young Virginia” (1600 -1833) — earliest settlements and the American Indians; Lord Fairfax and Lord Culpeper; Early legal system; technology, transportation, and occupations; life in Culpeper; establishment of new towns, organizations, churches, post offices (will yours be represented?).
Phase II, “Rappahannock - The Early Years” (1833 - 1860) — Our first county districts; county seat, etc., (will yours be represented?); our local government then.
Phase III, “The Civil War” (1861 - 1890) — The presence of the Union Army; the pres
