This marked the second year for Baltimore’s Basketball Camp at Rappahannock High School, the brainchild of RCHS varsity coach Eugene Baltimore.
There are actually three separate camps — one for youth (boys and girls), fourth through seventh grade, one for girls seventh grade and up, and another for boys, eighth grade and up. Baltimore coaches the youth and the boys camps. He had able assistance with the youth camp from coach Rhonda Jenkins. The camps were all held the same week this year but Baltimore said they’ll probably split them up next year.
Luther Stanley coaches the girls camp and said the program has been very successful. “The camp went very well this year and I taught a lot of fundamentals. We also went over plays we will use next year and worked on our defense. Last year the camp really helped them with their play and this year they should do even better.”
Stanley lost only two seniors this year and so almost everyone will be back.
Almost 30 kids participated in the youth camp. “They had a great time and really got into the game,” said Stanley, who was cheering the players on from the sidelines last week along with parents and members of the boys and girls teams.
Dylan Corbin, 10, of Sperryville, spoke for his teammates, “It’s good.” he said of the camp experience. “We practiced a lot of defensive slides and we learned basic skills like passes and overhead passes. We already knew about what double-dribble and walking mean. It’s hard work but it does get you fit.”
