Saturday marked the 37th annual Fourth of July Celebration in Washington, Va. and it was spectacular as always, though a little damp toward the end of the day. That however did not dampen spirits. The annual Friends of the Library Book Sale went off very well this year. The musical entertainment was also well received by the crowd from the group of local singers performing favorite patriotic songs to the Alexandria Fyfes, Drums & Trumpets. The children’s bicycle parade, held at 4:30 p.m., was a big hit with its youthful, and quite colorful, participants. And kids like Brooke Thorpe, below left, enjoyed the treats available, like the snowcones. Then began the evening’s entertainment with The Blues Fuze at 4:30 p.m. William Carrigan’s hill at his home, Avon Hall, was the perfect setting, as ever, for viewing the fireworks or just relaxing. The audience sat on blankets or chairs and some picnicked while listening to various musicians perform before the fireworks display at dark. At 8:25 p.m., the Alexandria Fyfes, Drums & Trumpets, above left, paraded through town and then made its performance on the hill below Avon Hall followed by the spectacular fireworks display which lit up the night, at right. The event was sponsored by the Rappahannock Association for the Arts and Community together with the Town of Washington.
