me that whenever Roy had an appearance in the city they would drive down from their ranch at Apple Valley and stay in the same room. Had done that for years, she said.
The next morning Roy was getting coffee in the motel office. We spoke hello and talked of the weather. He struck me as the real deal, just an old cowboy who did not have a phony bone in his body. He was down to earth, unpretentious, and a straight shooter. What I had seen as a little boy was what I got as a grown man.
Those two reel B-Westerns of the ‘30s and ‘40s were the morality plays for a generation of American kids. They taught us right from wrong. They taught us how to behave, how to stand up for our beliefs, how to treat others, and how corruption is always exposed and the good guys and gals ultimately prevail. Sure the world ain’t that way, pardner, but it’s our job to try and make it like that. And don’t ever quit tryin’, buckaroo.
The old cowboy hung up his spurs Monday morning at the age of 86. Dale Evans survives him. And so does his contemporary, his colleague and friend Gene Autry, who is 90. They were the good guys. They always won. And so did we because they were around. Happy IVails.
