Setting aside for a moment the emotional reactions triggered by death and loss, there are also the intellectual ruminations that attend the leaving of this world that no thinking man, woman, or child can ignore. Immediate questions usually center on one's belief in the soul and its continuity beyond mortal bounds. There might also be a ponderance of the meaning of our existence. These musings about death can have great effect upon those who allow themselves to conjure them up. As Isaac Rosenfeld once wrote: “Life being what it is in our world, the onset of death is often the first taste a man gets of freedom. At last, the imagination can come into its own, and as a man yields to it, his emotions take on a surprising depth and intensity.”
