For some years, I commuted to Burbank, Calif, for the filming of “The Dukes of Hazzard.” Not interested in living the Hollywood life, I rented a room in a working man’s motel about a block from the Warner Bros, studio and simply checked out and flew home when my scenes had been shot. One perfect spring evening I was on the motel balcony watching a classic Los Angeles sunset over the palm covered Hollywood Hills. A late model Cadillac pulled into the parking lot beneath me and a couple in their 70s got out. She was stout, with gray hair tinted blue, and a pretty face that wore a worried responsibility. The man was small and slight, dressed in a brown western suit, and he walked like a bantam. As they crossed the lot toward me I recognized Roy Rogers and Dale Evans. They went into the room directly below mine.
Now, in my acting career I have met and worked with a lot of well known stars and celebrities. Folks like Grace Kelly, Paul Newman, and Orson Wellep. But the sight of Roy and Dale walking across the parking lot was a close up view of American royalty. My first thought was something like, “I oughta call all those guys who picked on me in the second grade and tell ‘em, ‘Hey man I’m out here in Hollywood living upstairs from Roy and Dale’."
But I didn’t. It was quite enough just to know it. The lady who ran the motel told
