These student mentors were introduced to their eighth grade partners at a picnic in June, and will meet again Aug. 28 at a pool party to get set for the start of school. As a result, these chosen eighth graders will each have someone to show them the ropes. The confusion of new routines and paperwork will be eased by their own “old pro”, so that these newcomers can concentrate on getting a good start in high school.
We anticipate that the success of this pioneering group of mentors, and their younger partners will become a tradition and that one day every eighth grader will have a buddy.
The Starfish Mentoring Program, under the auspices of Headwaters, was in the planning stages for over a year before the first founding mentors were trained. Resources from many other established programs have been modified to fit the needs of our community. Mentors are required to go through an application and screening process before they begin the orientation and training.
