People in the county who need “weatherproofing” work done on their home, but are not able to afford it, may not realize that they have somewhere to turn for help.
Virginia Mountain Housing, Inc., a nonprofit housing development corporation with offices in Winchester, is preparing for a busy season of weatherizing homes for low income families in the area. The Winchester office serves many northern Virginia localities, including Rappahannock County.
VMH’s program runs year round, and is targeted toward elderly, disabled and single-parent homes. But many people across the region, including Rappahannock County, that could use the service are not aware that it exists. VMH Outreach Coordinator Norma Jean Shaw wants people in Rappahannock County to be aware that the program is available, as her office sees a need for the program here.
Some of the tasks involved in weatherizing a home include: diagnostic tests to determine heat loss areas; inspection and/or replacement or repair of window caulking; insulation and weather stripping of doors; indoor air quality checks (including tests for carbon monoxide and gas leaks); installation of carbon monoxide and smoke detectors; inspection and/or repair or installation of primary heating equipment; and insulation of
