Carter Jr. of the Amissville Volunteer Fire Department was named Rescue Squadsman of the Year and Chucky Jenkins of the Sperryville Volunteer Fire Department was named Firefighter of the Year by the Rappahannock County Volunteer Fire and Rescue Association. The winners were chosen from nominations made by each of the county’s departments. Rappahannock County is the recipient of a $25,000 federal grant to establish a multi-faceted program to make long-term unemployed residents self-sufficient. Social Services Director Beverly Bowen said the program, which is a joint effort of the Social Services Departments in Rappahannock,1 Madison and Culpeper counties, is one of the first of its kind in Virginia.
