It was so hot last summer, even the pigs wouldn't eat. But this summer's cooler than average temperatures have the pigs making real pigs of themselves. Even the lambs are looking down right porky. Fortunately, for Katie Updike and David Massie, the steers look fabulous. But the heavyweight hogs and the large lambs will require some inventive diet and exercise pro-* grams.
Each winter, members of the Rappahannock 4-H Livestock Club select their project animals. First year member Kara Corbin thought a market lamb would be fun to raise. She didn’t realize what a fantastic jumper her little lamb would be. Keeping "Princess" penned has become a family obsession, despite the fact that all of Princess' jumping, strengthens her hindquarters and potentially increases her value as a market animal.
