Some of the hogs are overweight, too. The hogs need to weigh between 220 and 260 pounds. The ideal weight of 250 pounds provides the perfect animal for processing into lean flavorful pork. All market hog exhibitors started with 30 - 50 pound piglets in early April.

Adam Rhein, Austen Rhein and Kevin Riedel all selected Hampshire x Yorkshire x Landrace crossbreds. David and Caroline Massie bought Hampshire x Yorkshire crossbreds and Yorkshire x Hampshire crosses. Samantha Falls has Duroc crosses along with her Yorkshire cross.

Despite differences in breed preference, the youth all agreed that crossbred pigs exhibit hybrid vigor. That means they are easier to raise to 250 pounds in the four months before the Farm Fair; but it's still not easy. Last year, Adam's hog did not make it to 220 pounds in time for the fair and Adam was not able to sell the animal in the market auction at the conclusion of the fair. Adam has now added fresh goat's milk to increase the weight gain on his hogs this year.
