Mr. Jon Smythe, the RCHS Athletic Director, announced that high school wrestling is coming back to the county. A wrestling program has been initiated at the high school starting this season. Tryouts for the high school team will begin in November and the wrestlers will compete from this December through February of next year.
The decision to start the program began with hiring Mr. Jim Wells. As the Athletic Director said, "I've known Jim Wells for several years and he's the kind of quality individual you want involved with your children, whether they wrestle or not. The fact that we could get him on our staff to jump start and run a wrestling program was the key to this decision."
Mr. Wells was a member of the Virginia Tech varsity wrestling team in 1973-74, wrestling in every meet his senior year. Prior to that, he had nine starts as a freshman on the varsity wrestling team at Appalachian State University in 1972.-A Salem native, he earned four letters as a varsity wrestler at Andrew Lewis High school in Salem from 1967-71. After completing high School in Salem he attended college and graduated from Virginia Tech in 1975 with a BS in accounting. He later earned an MBA from Southern Illinois University in 1982.
