world-famous neighbor and the changes it has brought to what was once a quiet, unremarkable county seat," author Levin writes. "They have little in common with the well-heeled guests deposited on the Inn's doorstep by stretch limousines and the occasional helicopter."
The book quotes a couple of locals who are less than enthralled with the Inn. It also quotes O'Connell in reaction: "We had a sense of the local mentality but perhaps misunderstood how threatening to people significant change can be. Anyone introducing change in a small landscape is going to be suspiciously regarded. We are always going to have a few diehards talking about the good old days when this was a gas station."
The book is generally well written and thoroughly reported, but marred by a few annoying errors. Chief among these is the writer's insistence on placing the Inn and the Town of Washington in Virginia's Shenandoah Valley. The town is a "Shenandoah Valley hamlet" and Route 211 "slices though the Shenandoah Valley" into the town etc., etc., according to the author, who is from New Jersey, and is shows.
But such quibbles aside, this is a book for anyone who has ever set foot in the Inn, as well as for those who never have and never will. Its large, 9 by 11 inch format is perfect for displaying dozens of beautiful photographs of the Inn and Rappahannock County. The pages featuring dinner plates look good enough to eat, and the last chapter supplies a few of the restaurant's creative recipes-just in case you want to whip up "Crispy Seared Foie Gras on Polenta with Country Ham and Blackberries" for lunch.
