Charged with eluding
ACastleton man was charged with attempting to elude a police officer after being caught by a Rappahannock Sheriffs Office deputy.
The incident happened on Aug. 9 at about 4:27 a.m.
James Darren Tharp, 21, was apprehended on Richmond Road (Route 729) after he allegedly tried to escape from Dep. J. C. Welch, who had pursued him off of U.S. 211.
Gas theft charged
The Sheriffs Office has a suspect in the theft of gasoline from Settle's Garage in Flint Hill, but have not made an arrest.
At around 10 a.m. on Aug. 9, a call came in that a woman had put gasoline in her vehicle at Settle's, but was unable to pay because "she had picked up the wrong wallet."
The woman, who claimed she lived 45 minutes from Flint Hill, promised to return with the money. She offered no identification, but did give a Social Security Number, which turned out to be false. "We think we have her name,: said Sherertz. "She is also wanted other places.
Maj. Chris Williams is investigating the theft.
Underage drinking
A 20-year-old Washington woman was stopped on U. S. 211 early on the morning of Aug. 12, and charged with "illegal consumption of alcohol" because she is underage, according to Sherertz.
"Those under 21 should be aware that in Virginia, we have zero tolerance for underage drinking," said Sherertz.
It is a serious matter if a person under 21 is shown to have a blood-alcohol level over .02 percent, according to Sherertz.
"From .02 to .08, we will charge the individual with illegal consumption," he explained. "Over .08 percent, the charge is driving while intoxicated."
