KNOWLEDGE
We humans carry knowledge that we presume no other animal possesses. That is, we know our lives here on earth are finite and that we shall all eventually perish. As the great thinker Voltaire once postulated, “The human race is the only one that knows it must die, and it knows this only through its experience. A child brought up alone and transported to a desert island would have no more idea of death than a cat or plant.” The question then becomes “What do we do with this knowledge"? Do we use it to imbue our lives with more meaningful thoughts and behavior, or do we cower before death ? Any race is made more meaningful by the finish line.
It's an odd thing that the thing we most fear—the unknowns that death and dying bring—is also that which makes our time here so very precious to us.
